Comet McNaught (C/2009 R1)

Observations in South Bavaria / Germany

Comet McNaught (C/2009 R1)

Prognosis on 06/04/2010

Comet McNaught C2009/R1 has now the estimated mag* 5,3, If this trend goes further on like this it will become  a bright object of may mag* 2-3, observable between the 15th-28th of June with naked eyes easily. Best observation time is 2:00-3:00 o'clock in the morning. From the middle of June you can see the comet postioned deep in the northern direction also before midnight. Comet McNaught gets circumpolar at the 06/07/10 (Valid for the latitude 48° north ).

The way of Comet

Advice: Due to the close orbital way around the sun the comet is best to observe between the northern latitudes 47° to 52° on earth. If you are too much in the southern areas the comet will decline too near to the horizon, if you are in the upper northern part of earth the problem are the 'white nights'. That means it won't get dark enough.

Comet passing Persei delta at 06/15/2010, 00:52 - 1.06UTC

Due to the 'bad seeing' weather situation and two failure trips up to an altitude of 2000m in the Austrian/Italian Alps the last chance to get actually one image was one nice day/night at the 15th of June.

This images were taken near Höchstadt/Dillingen, Bavaria. The whole night weak cirrostratus were disturbing the obeservations. Only in the last half hour before the morning dawn the sky got clearer. The upper photo was shot right trough the 'soup', the down photo near the upper bound of the hazy horizon. The comet arosed to an altitude of 15°. The brightness was hard to determine but surprisingly it seemed that the brightness of comet gets weaker. Offical observations are confirming this negative trend.

Maybe this are the last images.

*mag  = > light magnitude: Up to mag +3-4 stars are visible nearby cities with the naked eye, in very dark areas the seeing limit can reach up to mag +6-7.

The more higher numerical value is given, the more weaker are the objects. E.g. - 4,7 mag, Venus glittering; - 1,0 Sirius, brightest star; +3,5 M31 Andromeda, pale shiny oval)
