Discovery and appearence dates
On January 2023, the brightest comet since
Neowise C/2020
F3 was discovered by the
Chinese observatory which is situated in
the Tsuchishan
Mountains (Purple Mountains).
Initially, the comet was classified as an
asteroid with ~*mag
23,
In April 2023 the comet could also belated
confirmed by the PanSTARRS observatory in
Hawai'i as part of the
ATLAS
(Asteroid
Terrestical-impact
Last
Alert
System)
program.
When I received the
report of the comet I jokingly thought, 500
times to sleep and the show begins ;-). After
500 sleep units the comet
reached the sun near orbit and could be observed
with the naked eye from Earth. The comet reached
the brightness
of (-3) - (-4)
*mag
during the solar passage
from October 8th to 10th and was lined up in the top three brightest comets
of the last 100 years. Allegedly day images
before sunset
were
taken from the comet but I haven't seen any convincing results
until now.
Tsuchi was positioned in the perihelion (closest point to the
sun) on October 3rd. The closest distance to
Earth was at October 12th with 0.47 AU, which
corresponds to 71 million kilometers.
Observations: Several attempts
in South Germany to see the comet during its approach on
September 26/27/28/September failed miserably
because I was confronted with low-lying
cloud banks that appeared suddenly during the
observations. During the further
observations from the 12th October onwards
mostly suboptimal weather conditions like
fog banks, haze and the waxing moon / full moon
disturbed intensively.
First sighting: October 13, 2024
Amiata
volcano and the comet
Escaping
from the bad weather in Germany and mostly Northern Europe the
first sucessful sighting occurred on the
13th in Tuscany near the Monte Amiata volcano
25 km north of Orvieto (Italy).
I also have to addmit that finding this location was
purely coincidental as I had to escape again
from a cloud
barrier situated south of Siena.
And it is not easy to get a free sight in
the forests regions
of Tuscany. By
energetic driving and searching I reached this
brilliant place in the last minutes!!
However, this 'last minute' sighting was
extremely impressive and you have to see this
celestial event by yourself to admire a 1.3

addition it is really seldom to see a
comet in the dusk with naked eyes.

Ciao :-)
*mag
= > light magnitude:
Up to
mag
+3 or +4
stars are visible nearby cities with the naked eye, in
very dark areas the seeing limit can reach up to
mag +6.
The more higher numerical value is given, the more weaker
are the objects. E.g.
- 4,7 mag, Venus glittering;
- 1,0 Sirius,
brightest star;
+ 3,5
M31 Andromeda,
pale shiny oval)
